Neonatal mortality rate, time and cause of deaths among very low birth weight infants in Korea: in comparison with Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development nationsInfant, Extremely low birth weight, Mortality, Cause of death
Bae Chong-Woo

Abstract
In Korea, neonatal intensive care began in the early 1980s, and currently has about 35 years of history. Over the past several decades, advances in innovative drugs, equipment and institutional support about neonatal care have improved the neonatal mortality rate, infant mortality rate and survival of very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) in Korea. In this study, we reviewed changing patterns in neonatal and infant mortality rate, survival rate and causes of death for VLBWI as representative items of neonatal epidemiology in Korea for the last three decades. In addition, by comparing recent data with Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations, particularly with the United States, we could recognize the level of neonatal care in Korea around the world. Therefore, we would provide help to normal infants and development of neonatal intensive care in the future by providing changing data about neonatal epidemiology in Korea for the 35 years through this review article.
